The Sapporo Snow Festival, called Sapporo Yuki Matsuri is one of the most famous annual event in winter, which is held for one week in Sapporo, Hokkaido. This festival was started in 1950 by the local high students making six small snow sculptures in Odori Park, the center of the city, and nowadays it has developed a large commercialized event attracting more than two million people all over the world. Many teams participate in this festival from all parts of the country and visitors enjoy their huge snow and ice sculptures and seeing the process to make them.
The snow festival has three site, which is Odori Site, Susukino Site, and Tsu Dome Site.
The main site is centrally located at Odori Park. The festival’s famous huge statues are displayed and make a line in a space expanding around 1.5 km. There are several size and various type of sculptures, for example Disney characters, some historical buildings such as Angkor temple, Tsuruga Castle, Egyptian Pyramid, and so on. The snow sculptures are different each year, and International Snow Sculpture Contest are held, which many national teams from all over the world participate in. These largest snow sculptures are as huge as 50 high and 80 feet wide, and they are lighted up at night every day. Furthermore you can see more ice statues at the Susukino site, which is the best night spot with Hokkaido delicious seafood dishes.
At Tsu Dome Site, there are snow slides and snow rafting for entertaining families. More ice sculptures are displayed here too.
