During the holiday season in the winter, towns and parks are illuminated by astonishingly brilliant light displays throughout Japan. Japanese people love to decorate everything with lights and ribbons. Many parks spend a great deal of time and effort into the illuminations. Usually tourists come to Japan around the spring time to see cherry blossoms, but you are missing out if you do not come to Japan in the winter because these illuminations are so brilliant, and the effects are truly enchanting!

One of the most spectacular and amazing light shows in Japan is Kobe Luminarie in Hyogo Prefecture. It started as a commemoration for the victims of the disastrous Kobe Earthquake in 1995. Millions of light bulbs are used to form tunnels of light, towers, and cathedral-like creations, called Galleria. Kobe Luminarie has 3.5 millions of visitors every year. But it is not the only place to go see amazing light shows. There are many other winter illuminations in cities such as Tokyo, Sendai, Nagoya, Osaka, and etc. In recent years, illuminations have become more advanced, and some use the 3D projection mapping technology with stories set to the music. Here are Japan’s popular seasonal illumination spots: Tokyo Michiterasu and Marunouchi Illumination, Tokyo Shiodome Caretta Illumination, Tokyo Mid-Town, Tokyo Yomiuri-land Jewellumination, Sendai Pagent of Starlight, Tokyo German Village Winter Illumination, Sagamiko Illumillion, Tsumakoi Sound Illumination, Nabana no sato Illumination, Osaka Hikari Renaissance, Osaka Midosuji Illumination, and Nagasaki Huis Ten Bosch Illumination.

The Nagasaki Huis Ten Bosch illumination is called Kingdom of Light. In the entire area, 13 millions of light bulbs are used to light up.

You can also enjoy waterfall of light, bungee jumping into a sea of light, and snow slides through glittering light. With sparkling lights all over the vast grounds, the parks turn into light theme park by night. You see couples and families walking together through lights. With walk-through tunnels and rivers of lovely light, you feel like you are walking through bright magical portals and stepping into another world. Even though it is very cold outside, these winter illuminations really warm you.
