If you are planning to visit Beppu in the Oita Prefecture, here is one more thing that attracts many tourists aside from “onsen” (hot springs) : the amazing panoramic view from the Beppu Ropeway.
The Beppu Ropeway is a large cable car which can hold 101 passengers. It is one of the largest cable cars in the world. It takes you up to the top of Mt. Tsurumi in 10 minutes. Mt. Tsurumi is 1375 meters high and is located at the east edge of Aso Kujun National Park. The Beppu Ropeway runs every 20 minutes. With the smooth ride, you can enjoy the lovely view and it gets better as you go up higher. At the top of Mt. Tsurumi, there are observing points, small shrines, and a path which takes you to the summit. From the summit, you can see the steam clouds coming out of the hot springs over Beppu City. You will experience amazing panoramic views looking towards the entire Beppu, Mt. Yufu, the Kuju Mountains, and the Chugoku and Shikoku Regions. Mt. Tsurumi offers fantastic scenery for each season: cherry blossoms and azaleas in spring, cool relief in summer, stunning autumnal leaves, and silvery hoarfrost in winter. In summer, the view is spectacular at night. (Night operation is available in August.)
As it can get quite cold on the top of the mountain, and there are many stairs to climb, it is recommended to prepare some proper outerwear and shoes. Mt. Tsurumi also has an uphill road access from Mt. Aso area with lovely scenery. Coupons for the Beppu Ropeway are available from some brochures.
