Lake Shikotsu is a caldera lake in Chitose, Hokkaido. It is located in the south-west part of Hokkaido. Lake Shikotsu was formed over 40,000 years ago by volcanic activity and it has a maximum depth of 363 meters, making it the second deepest lake in Japan. It is also known as the most northerly lake in Japan that does not freeze over.
If you are a nature lover, lake shikotsu is one of the best place to visit. The lake is surrounded by three volcanos and you can enjoy the untouched nature around. There is a small touristy town with a visitor center where you can rent boats, bicycles or subs gear. There are also great ryokan around with natural springs if you would like to stay.
Looking down on lake shikotsu from the top of the mountains will remind you a lot of things that you may forget in the daily life and you will be able to cleanse your soul completely!
