[Akita]”Kiritanpo” , the local dish of Akita prefecture2013.05.19

Kiritanpo is a traditional Japanese food from the Akita prefecture.  It is made from cooked rice that is kneaded and then toasted on a skewer. It is customary to eat this dish from Autumn to Spring, especially in November when newly harvested rice arrives on the market.

Akita prefecture is famous for rice farming and its Sake breweries. Kiritanpo is known as ‘the taste of mother’s home cooking’ in this area and it is very popular to serve it when visitors come to your house. It is also very common to eat Kiritanpo in a Japanese style hot pot with chicken stock. The sweetness of the newly harvested rice that has soaked up the chicken stock is absolutely delicious and will warm up your body from the inside.

If you ever have a chance to go to Akita, remember to put eating Kiritanpo on the top of your to-do list!
