Nikujaga is the Japanese style of stew with meat, potatoes, and onion which sweetened soy sauce.
It is popular food for Japanese and often considered as “mother’s home cooking” (“ofukuro no aji” in Japanese). It can be easily cooked in your country so long as you can get soy sauce, sake and mirin. It is also good dish to learn the concept of the Japanese flavor. It is hard to find thin sliced meat but it is not a big deal. The ‘can’t-go-wrong’ ratio is soy sauce 4: mirin 4: sake 2: sugar 1.
Learning how to cook Nikujaga will give you a good understanding of Japanese flavoring and you will be able to cook more variety of Japanese food!
